These pieces are now being shown at Bilborough College, Nottingham as part of a selection of work being shown from the recent prac•tice exhibition. Having the work around the students is opening up some interesting dialogue.

IN PROGRESS SUBTERRANEAN (and above)

Sub and above in progress - Pauline Woolley 2012 |
I have been busy drawing on bits of paper and in my sketchbook in preparation for the large pieces I have now planned to make. Interestingly I have been combining lens based and camera-less image making with drawing. The drawing is mediative and repetitive in it's process I am at a stage where I feel that talking about the process will start to break the rhythm of the work.

THE QUEST FOR DARK MATTER
I have just completed three new drawings relating to Dark Matter for the forthcoming group show and in doing some further research found this interesting short video of an interview of Dr Sean Palling at the Boulby mine.

DARK MATTER - THE BEGINNING
![]() |
Pauline Woolley - 2010 |
With a mixture of photographic techniques and drawing the dark matter series has become challenging. Working on a theme where by the initial visit to the lab prevented any kind of photography, I have no primary visual material (except for a few mineral samples from underground) to work from and so these initial pieces are almost to try and recreate something that (ironically) isn't there.

I feel I know what I want to make, but whether it translates is hard to tell at the moment.

REDNILE PROJECTS - BOULBY POTASH MINE
Back in May I was selected as 1 of 7 artists by rednile.org to participate in one of their Factory Night events. I travelled all the way up to Saltburn-by-the sea by train and arrived late evening to thick sea fog. This was only the start of the intense, atmospheric experience that awaited me and the other chosen artists the following day. Click here to read rednile's account of our time 1,100 metres down into the Earth.
Big thanks to rednile.org and Suzanne Hutton for giving me this opportunity that has now taken my work into a new realm. Also thanks to the other artists who took part of this unique experience. It was great to share the day with you.
